Thai designs well received at shows

28-09-2018

Contemporary jewellery from Thailand showed at recently-concluded jewellery fairs in Bangkok and Hong Kong in September has received “overwhelming attention” from visitors, said The Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (Public Organization) (GIT).

The showcase, named ‘Gems Treasure’, consisted of jewellery from the ‘Contemporary Design Project’ initiated by GIT since August 2017, aiming to promote Thai modern jewellery designs and craftsmanship heritage to global audience.

According to GIT, an expert team was sent to 15 provinces in Thailand to recruit potential jewellers into the ‘Contemporary Design Project’. “Currently, the participants in three pilot provinces including Chiang Mai, Nan, and Sukhothai and five targeted provinces, namely Phrae, Surin, Petchaburi, Trat, and Satun and GIT’s working team have jointly searched for local identities and used them in designing beautiful contemporary jewelry which can be worn every day,” said Duangkamol Jiambutr, GIT’s director.

Five Thailand’s renowned jewellery designers including Valaipan Chupan from Flow and Surasak Maneesathianrattana from Carletta Jewellery were invited to work with local entrepreneurs from the five targeted provinces participating in this project to turn design concepts into real jewellery items.

Jiambutr said that the jewellery fairs serve as a good channel for Thai jewellery made by local artisans to explore overseas markets. “Our ‘Gems Treasure’ showcase in these two jewellery fairs experienced great success as many visitors wanted to place orders for the jewellery,” she said.
