The former president of Alrosa from 2015 to 2017, Andrey Zharkov(photo 1) plans to start a lab-grown diamond jewellery brand. He stated that lab-grown diamonds are ‘new age diamonds’ for people who are open-minded, ready for change and care about responsible consumption. He foresees lab-grown diamonds will irrevocably change the landscape of the industry in the next five to ten years. Alrosa refused to comment on his move and said: “We can only comment on our business, not others.”
Zharkov has started a lab-grown venture, Ultra C, which will be based in Switzerland with subsidiaries in the United States, Russia, and Singapore. The company is being funded by private investors. He hopes to work with other market players to work together on standards, pricing, generic marketing, and cooperate with natural diamond producers.
