De Beers shuts a South African mine

2-8-2018

De Beers Consolidated Mines Proprietary Limited (DBCM) has decided to shut down Voorspoed Mine, follows an unsuccessful attempt to find a suitable buyer for the mine. "Not one of the four final companies (among 42expressions of interest) we were speaking to managed to meet all the criteria we set, so we’ve taken the decision to close Voorspoed," said Philip Barton, CEO of DBCM.

The mine has operated since 2008. The closing of Voorspoed Mine will leave De Beers with just one diamond mine in South Africa. The other South African mine is Venetia in the Limpopo Province. De Beers is currently investing US$2 billion in attempt to expand its operating life into the 2040s.
