Sotheby’s spring sale the highest since 2015

04-04-2018

Sotheby’s Hong Kong spring 2018 important watches sale fetched a total of HK$139 million (US$17.7 million) on 2 April, marking the highest total for the company’s sales in Asia since spring 2015.

The top lot, one of only seven known in the world, an important and extremely rare Patek Philippe stainless steel chronograph watch ref 1579 (photo 1) was sold for about HK$8.8 million to an Asian private collector. Ten pieces of Rolex Daytona were all sold with a combined total of over HK$15 million.

Sam Hines, Sotheby’s Worldwide Head of Watches, said: “We are pleased to have achieved our highest total for a sale of watches in Hong Kong since Spring 2015. The market for vintage masters remains strong, in particular for Patek Philippe and Rolex Daytonas. We saw collectors compete for rare and unusual watches, while rare contemporary timepieces fresh-to-the-market performed well. We are now looking forward to our Spring auctions in London, Geneva, and New York, as well as our online sale which opens for bidding on 18 April.”

Including the watch sale, Sotheby’s spring Hong Kong auction series comprised of 19 sales in six days started 29 March achieved a total of HK$3.64 billion, setting 20 world records.
