Nine of the leading diamond industry organisations have released a jointly developed Diamond Terminology Guideline recently to encourage full, fair and effective use of a clear and accessible terminology for diamonds and their counterparts by all sector bodies, organisations, traders and retailers.
According to a joint statement, the guideline serves as a reference document for the diamond and jewellery trade when referring to diamonds and synthetic diamonds. It is built on two internationally accepted standards: the ISO 18323 Standard and the CIBJO Diamond Blue Book.
The document stipulates that the words ‘diamond’ and ‘gemstone’ imply natural origin. The industry should use ‘synthetic’, ‘laboratory-grown’ or ‘laboratory-created’, and should avoid the terms ‘real’, ‘genuine’ and ‘authentic’, when describing such man-made products.
The parties that created the guideline include World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO),Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC), Diamond Producers Association (DPA), Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), Israel Diamond Industry (IDI), International Diamond Manufacturers Association (IDMA), US Jewelry Council (USJC), World Diamond Council (WDC) and World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB).
