Rio Tinto showcases a pink diamond gold coin

2-2-2018

Rio Tinto and The Perth Mint unveil the first pavé set Argyle pink diamond gold coin. The coin is adorned with 18-carat pink gold Chinese phoenix, set with a total of 1.22 carats of pink diamonds dug up from Rio Tinto’s Argyle diamond mine.

“Inspired by (an) ancient Chinese legend, the fine detail and artistry of The Jewelled Phoenix have taken our craftsmanship to the next level,” said Perth Mint chief executive officer Richard Hayes.

The Jewelled Phoenix will be showcased at the prestigious 47th World Money Fair in Berlin from 2-4 February 2018.

Rio Tinto’s Argyle diamond mine has been operating since 1983 and has produced more than 800 million carats of rough diamonds. It produces virtually the world’s entire supply of pink, red and violet diamonds, producing over 90 percent of the world's supply.

The mine is set to shut down in 2020. There is an increasing awareness among collectors that the global supply of pink diamonds may run out.
