Israeli diamond leaders meet Alrosa chief

The Israel Diamond Institute (IDI) chairman Shmuel Schnitzer and president of the Israel diamond Exchange (IDE) Yoram Dvash have recently met Alrosa’s president Sergey Ivanov in Moscow to discuss diamond supply and generic diamond marketing.

It was the first meeting for the three parties since Ivanov became Alrosa’s president, according to IDI. Dvash and Schnitzer asked the Russian miner to increase the supply of rough and polished diamonds through its tenders in Israel.

“We perceived a readiness to heed to our suggestions”, said Schnitzer after the meeting. He said Ivanov will visit IDE in September for the first time, and they will resume the discussions there.

Also on the agenda was the Diamond Producers Association's (DPA’s) increased marketing budget for 2017 from US$6 million to US$57 million this year.

“We congratulated Ivanov on his contribution to the DPA’s decision to increase its budget”, Schnitzer said. “We stressed the importance of generic diamond marketing, an issue that has suffered from under-exposure in recent years while other luxury goods enjoyed increased marketing exposure”.
