Baselworld 2018 shortened to six days

In response to the declining exhibitors and visitors, organiser of Baselworld announced that the next edition will be held 22-27 March 2018, reduced by two days to six days.

Sylvie Ritter, managing director of the world’s largest watch and jewellery fair, acknowledged that the industries are going through a challenging phase that affects smaller companies in particular. “Listening to our exhibitors and in agreement with the members of the different committees, we have decided to reduce the duration of the show and adjust the prices accordingly,” she said. “Baselworld will maintain the attractiveness of the show and its global impact by remaining faithful to our strategy which favors quality and leverages diversity in all sectors.”

Figures from the just-concluded Baselworld 2017 showed the continued decline of the show. Buyers were down four percent year-on-year to 106,000. The number of journalists stood at 4,400 which is the same as last year. The largest drop was in exhibitors, down from 1,500 to 1,300, a 13.3-percent decline from 2016.

Baselworld 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the fair.
