HK’s new design contest to benefit industry’s sustainability

The inaugural Hong Kong Secondary School Original Jewellery Design Competition, co-organised by the Gem & Jewellery Alumni Association (GJAA) and the Education Bureau, will be held on 23 April at SKH St Mary's Church Mok Hing Yiu College aiming to nurture new design talents for the sustainability of Hong Kong’s jewellery industry.

Themed ‘Nature’, the competition is reserved for S3 to S5 students in Hong Kong. Entries will be judged on the following criteria: creativity (40%); artistic, technique and practicality (40%); and adherence to the design objective given (20%). A briefing workshop was held on 26 March.

The judging panel will consist of industry heavyweights, including director of Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Co Ltd Ho Pak Tao, founding president and chairman of the Diamond Federation of Hong Kong (DFHK) Lawrence Ma, managing director of CSS Jewellery Co Ltd Chow Kit Shing, director and deputy chairman of Luk Fook Holdings (International) Limited Tse Moon Chuen, GIA Asia Pacific managing director Seung-Hae Moon, and HKU SPACE jewellery marketing and management courses honorary advisor Dr William Fong Yan.

The award presentation ceremony scheduled for within an hour after the contest will present 25 awards including the champion, the 1st runner-up, the 2nd runner-up, two merit awards and 20 finalist awards.

GJAA has been working close with the Education Bureau in providing local secondary schools with complimentary workshops since two years ago, Dr William Fong Yan told Hong Kong Jewellery. “The design competition is to arouse the students’ interest in jewellery design with the hope of developing them into respectable jewellery designers one day,” he said.

“GJAA has also been giving career talks to various secondary school students on career prospects in the jewellery industry which is not normally covered by their career masters. We need to encourage the younger generation to join our industry in order to maintain sustainability and enable our jewellery industry to prosper even more,” he added.
