Sotheby’s New York’s Magnificent Jewels auction, the final jewellery auction this year, combined exceptional stones with historic designs and provenance fetched US$52.3 million on 9 December 2015, and brought Sotheby’s jewellery worldwide annual total to US$571 million this year.

A platinum and diamond Van Cleef & Arpels necklace formerly from the collection of Queen Nazli of Egypt sold for US$4.3 million. This Art Deco necklace, set with more than 600 round and baguette diamonds arranged in a sunburst motif, was commissioned by the Queen for her daughter’s wedding in 1939. Sotheby’s estimated its value at US$3.6 million to US$4.6 million. The top lot went to a 25.87-carat cushion-cut sugarloaf cabochon sapphire ring that fetched US$5.1 million.
