HK retail sales continue to grow

04-11-2021

Hong Kong’s total retail sales value in September 2021 registered a 7.3-percent increase year-on-year. The category including jewellery saw a double-digit growth in the same period. The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) has attributed the boost to the e-voucher scheme.

The value of total retail sales in September was provisionally estimated at HK$28 billion, marking a 7.3-percent surge compared with the same period in 2020. According to C&SD, the total value of retail sales over the first three quarters of 2021 saw a y-o-y increase of eight percent.

The value of sales of jewellery, watches, clocks and valuable gifts in September 2021 achieved a 16.2-pecent increase to HK$3.2 billion. As for the first nine months of 2021, the figure rose by 30-percent y-o-y to HK$28 billion.

“The value of total retail sales continued to grow visibly in September, by 7.3% over a year earlier. For the third quarter as a whole, it also rose by 7.3%, partly reflecting the boosting effect of the Consumption Voucher Scheme,” a government spokesman said.

The spokesman added that the stable local epidemic and improving employment and income conditions have also contributed to the retail growth in near term. Nevertheless, “the virtually frozen inbound tourism will continue to constrain the extent of revival”. (Photo courtesy: Hong Kong Tourism Board)
