11-10-2021

The Blue Royale, only known Patek Philippe timepiece set with 11 round sapphire-hour-markers is about to go under the hammer as star lot in the two-day Hong Kong Watch Auction: XIII sale of Phillips late November.

The model (reference 3448) was first introduced in 1962 as the world's first self-winding perpetual calendar wristwatch with an estimated 568 pieces were produced. Except for being the only know gem-set piece of the watchmaker, it is also one of the only two pieces made of platinum among the majority of them are in yellow gold. The Blue Royale hasn’t been on public sale since 1998.

“Only a prominent collector with high standing with the Stern family, the owners of Patek Philippe, could obtain the utmost privilege of having a special platinum cased reference 3448,” said Phillips in a press release.
