  • In normal daylight, a fine alexandrite will appear bluish-green, but under lamplight or candle flame, the gem transitions to a vibrant raspberry red.

Russia to mine four times more alexandrite

12-8-2021

Russia, the second-largest producing country of alexandrite, plans to quadruple the output of the rare gemstones, RT-Capital, a subsidiary of the state-owned company Rostec and the country’s only emerald miner stated.

RT-Capital saw an 80 percent plummet in sales and an exports standstill last year. “In the second half of 2020, we saw a resurgence in demand for stones such as emerald and alexandrite,” said its chief executive Kirill Fedorov. With only a kilogram of colour-changing gemstone was mined in 2020, the company targets to stay up its gram to four kilograms this year.

Russia currently accounts for four percent of the world’s alexandrite production, following Brazil who products 93 percent every year. The price has rose not more than 30 percent since 2018.
