Cibjo’s new website tells what a diamond is

10-03-2021

The International Jewellery Confederation (Cibjo) has just launched a new website to inform consumers and industry practitioners about the precise terminology to use to describe natural diamonds and laboratory-grown diamonds.

The informational website, named “What is a diamond?”, is built by Cibjo’s Diamond Commission with the support of the SSEF Swiss Gemmological Institute. Using the CIBJO Diamond Blue Book as a primary reference, the definitions of diamonds comply with ISO Standard 18323 of the International Organisation for Standardisation. The website gives a clear distinction between natural and laboratory-grown diamonds, explains the distinctions used in the Harmonised Commodity Description and Coding System of the World Customs Organisation (WCO), and supplies concise guidelines as to the terminology that should be applied by traders of both natural and laboratory-grown diamonds.

Cibjo’s president Gaetano Cavalieri said: “The purpose of the website is to be an easy-to-find and simple-to-understand reference point for all those who purchase, sell or handle diamonds. Our goal is not to indicate what is better or more valuable, but rather to ensure that the public is able to distinguish between the different products in the marketplace. Consumer confidence, which is the bedrock of our industry, is completely dependent on people being able to make informed purchasing decisions." (Photos from www.whatisadiamond.org)
