Argyle pink diamond tender sets records

18-12-2020

The 2020 Argyle Pink Diamonds Tender from Rio Tinto closed on 2 December with double-digit price growth and a number of records delivered despite the challenge from the Covid-19 pandemic which delayed the launch and reduced the number of live viewings.

The first record went to the number of participants with successful bidders from eight countries and regions, said Rio Tinto yesterday. The 2.24-carat Argyle EternityTM (photo 1), the most valuable diamond in the collection of 62 rare pink, red, blue and violet diamonds from the Argyle mine in Australia, became the most valuable fancy vivid diamond in the tender’s 37 years of history. Values remain undisclosed. The diamond was sold to Hong Kong coloured diamond specialist Kunming Diamonds.

Another recording-breaking lot, the 0.70-carat oval fancy dark violet-grey Argyle InfiniteTM (photo 2) has now become the most valuable diamond in this colour category ever produced at the mine and presented at the annual tender.

According to Rio Tinto, the world’s supply of rare pink, red and violet diamonds from its Argyle mine ceased production started 3 November 2020, after 37 years of production. The value of Argyle pink diamonds sold at tenders has appreciated over 500 percent over the past two decades, outperforming all major equity markets. (Photo courtesy: Rio Tinto)
