Christie’s Geneva sale sets a new record

12-11-2020

Held live and online, the jewellery sale by Christie’s Geneva held on Tuesday fetched a total of CHF36.4 million (US$40 million). A new auction record price per carat was made by a 1.05-carat fancy purplish-red diamond.

With 89-percent sold by lot and 11 lots realised over US$1 million, the Swiss sale was led by a rectangular-cut fancy vivid yellow diamond weighing 28.88 carats (right) which was sold for CHF2,850,000. A Graff brooch set with a cushion-shaped fancy yellow diamond of 107.46 carats achieved CHF2,760,000. Also by Graff was a ring featuring a stunning 1.05-carat rectangular-cut fancy purplish-red diamond (left) sold for CHF2,520,000, translating into price per carat at US$2,640,000, a world auction record price per carat for a fancy purplish-red diamond.

Max Fawcett, head of jewellery department, Geneva, said: “Despite the challenging environment and the first auction at the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues without clients present in the room, Christie’s saw strong bidding from all over the world, both online and on the telephone. With a sell-through rate of 89%, it shows the market is robust and there is very competitive demand for exceptional jewels and coloured stones. We look forward to our successful sales in Paris, London, Hong Kong and finally New York to conclude the season.” (Photo courtesy: Christie's)
