15-7-2020

Thailand’s Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP)hosts a webinar titled ‘Managing the Crisis, Mitigating the Impact with Survival & Revival Strategy for Jewelry Industry Related Post COVID-19’, to explore potential jewellery business opportunity between Thailand and India.

Sanjay Kothari, former chairman of the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council of India (GJEPC) suggested Thailand to join the India Jewellery Excellence Symposium (IJES) initiative. Then, Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB) vice president, Mehul Shahexplained why now is a good time to invest in diamonds.

Gemburi managing director Phuket Khunaprapakorn said Chanthaburi gemstone market has bounced back to 80 percent sales volume of its pre-coronavirus status and was looking forward to exporting gemstones to India.

Jittima Nakamano, director of the Thai Trade Centre said, “COVID-19 has impacted the gems and jewelry industry around the world, due to the lockdown, social distancing, and reduced demand for gems and jewelry. From January to April 2020, the export value of Thailand’s gems and jewelry products (excluded unwrought gold) declined by 25.31 percent to US$1.77 billion, compared with the same period the previous year.” She believed that Thailand’s gemstone and jewellery industry would rebound after no COVID-19 cases reported.
