Fei cui guru shares buying tips online

10-06-2020

The Hong Kong Jewellers’ and Goldsmiths’ Association (HKJGA) has held an online sharing session on fei cui yesterday afternoon. Hosted by HKJGA’s vice chairman Lau Hak Bun, the event invited chairman of the Hong Kong Jade Association (HKJA) Law Chi Kwong to shed light on fei cui knowledge, tips for buying fei cui and consumer confidence, while expressing his aspirations to nurture younger talents for the fei cui industry in Hong Kong.

After the successful debut of the first session on diamonds dated 8 April, the fei cui session yesterday gathered nearly 150 online participants. According to Law Chi Kwong, the value of fei cui is primarily determined by its texture, colour and craftsmanship. Although the former two criteria supersede, exquisite craftsmanship shall add values to the piece. He elaborated the point by showing several magnificent fei cui pendants, bangles and ornaments he brought with him to the occasion. A fei cui bun, for instance, was made of an average-quality material of several thousand Hong Kong dollars. The price of the finished ornament commanded hundreds of thousands thanks to its meticulous craftmanship that makes a fei cui bun comes to life.

Some other pieces are evidence of young designs with elements of skulls, crosses and bats inspired by the west. Law aspires to see more young talents in the fei cui manufacturing and design sectors. He says design contests with special focus on fei cui are an effective platform to promote public interest in fei cui while nurturing new talents for the sustainable development of the industry.

Regarding consumer confidence, Law advised consumers to buy from reputable suppliers with testing certificates issued by accredited laboratories. Shops with the ‘Natural Fei Cui Quality Mark’ allow consumers to buy fei cui with a peace of mind as the logo bearers are only allowed to sell natural fei cui.

He stressed that although a certificate is vital to consumer confidence, it does not cope with all attributes of fei cui owing to its natural nature. Emotional and aesthetic values should also be considered when making purchases.
