Anglo American to go climate-smart

10-2-2020

Anglo American CEO Mark Cutifani announced to enhance its sustainability for low carbon emissions and cost-effectiveness to 7,000 delegates at 2020 Investing in African Mining Indaba conference in Cape Town.

He said the mining industry as a whole drives 45 percent of the world's economic activity directly and indirectly, it is still seen as one that takes more than it gives, which has brought it to a reputation crisis. The company needs to connect the future of mining with next-generation societal values including increased transparency, responsible technological innovation, sustainability and shared prosperity.

The leading miner has set an ambitious target to lower its greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency by 30 percent by 2030. South African government’s mineral resources and energy minister Gwede Mantashe said the department has worked with Anglo American on using hydro-fuel cell technology as an energy source for the mining activities.
