Rio Tinto donates 7.5 million for Australia

8-1-2020

Australian mining giant Rio Tinto has donated a further A$750,000 to the Red Cross, bringing the company’s total donation to A$1 million this year. According to Rio Tinto, the step was taken to support people affected by the escalation in the Australian bushfire crisis.

Bushfires have burnt more than 7.3 million hectares across Australia’s six states with New South Wales has been hardest hit. About half a billion animals have been affected by the fires and almost a third of koalas in NSW may have been killed in the fires. A total of 24 people died including volunteer firefighters and nearly 2,000 homes have been destroyed.

The funds will be used to help Red Cross providing vital support to impacted communities including safe places to take shelter, psychological first aid to reduce trauma, information and practical assistance through the time it can take to recover and longer-term recovery programmes in affected communities. Rio Tinto chief executive J-S Jacques said: “Beyond these steps announced today, we will continue to explore ways to help impacted communities in this time of need.”
