Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) signed an MOU with global e-commerce company eBay on 3 January. Its Gem Testing Laboratory (GTL) will offer certification services to all gemstones sold through eBay.
Certification will be issued at a nominal rate without any compromise on existing standards and protocols of testing. GJEPC said a reduction in certification fees would encourage online sellers to provide reports from a trustworthy lab even for low-value products.
ebay has more than 15,000 Indian SMEs and artisans exporting across 195 countries and regions. Indian jewellery is one of the popular products for a 180 million eBay customer base. Such a move is regarded as a global promotion on 'Make in India' products and Indian craftsmanship through credible certification. GJEPC Chairman Pramod Kumar Agrawal said: “We expect many more e-commerce platforms to sign similar agreements with GTL Jaipur.”
