The magnificent 10.64-carat fancy vivid purplish pink diamond was sold for nearly HK$156 million (about US$20 million) at Sotheby’s Hong Kong autumn jewellery sale yesterday.
Graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the internally flawless type IIa pink stone was polished as a radiant cut, with the outline of an emerald-cut diamond combined with the scintillation of a brilliant-cut diamond, boasting a combination of facets that enhance its face-up colour, according to the auction house.
Among the pink diamonds graded by GIA, only one percent are larger than 10 carats. Less than four percent of all pink diamonds achieve a fancy vivid colour, says Sotheby’s.
An 80.88-carat emerald-cut diamond and Anna Hu’s Dunhuang Pipa brooch and necklace set with a 100.02-carat fancy intense yellow diamond were among other highlights of the auction. Results are yet to be announced at press time. (Photo courtesy: Sotheby's)
