Sotheby’s July watch auctions gain US$12m

Sotheby's watch auctions worldwide have garnered US$12 million in July, bringing the revenue in 2019 to US$59 million, rocketed 54 percent yoy from US$38.2 million. Sam Hines, Global Head of Sotheby’s Watches, commented: “We are deeply appreciative of the support and trust of our buyers and sellers which has now made Sotheby's the number one auction house for watches so far this year.”

 

Participants from 82 countries and regions have taken part in the auctions with half of them were newcomers. Almost 40 percent of over-1,400-lots achieved prices over their high estimate. Compared to the first half of 2018, sales from its e-platform rocketed a whopping 85 percent.  

 

Sotheby’s highlighted George Daniels Space Traveller I was hammered at US$4.6 million in London in July has broken the world record for a timepiece by an independent watchmaker and highest price achieved for a watch at auction this year.

 

Five more timepiece auctions are coming up in August and September this year. The one around the corner will be Watches Online: The Driver’s Collection which will be open for bidding exclusively online from 14–20 August.
