De Beers relocates elephants

19-7-2019

De Beers announces the second translocation of elephants from its Venetia Limpopo Nature Reserve (VLNR) in South Africa to Zinave National Park in Mozambique has completed.

The translocation project titled “Moving Giants” targets to move some 200 elephants over three years. The first herds of elephants were released at Zinave two days after they were assembled at the VLNR in June. The final herds to Zinave arrived this week. 53 elephants have moved in this year following the 48 translocated elephants in July and August 2018. The remaining elephants at the VLNR are expected to be moved to Mozambique’s national parks next year. The project eases the elephant-load in the area while repopulating elephant population in Mozambique.

Beyond the translocation, De Beers supports Peace Parks Foundation through a $500,000 contribution - via the Anglo American Foundation - over five years to further bolster the organization’s already robust anti-poaching support measures that it has in place. This will include the hiring and training of new park rangers, and the opening of new access roads to increase patrol coverage.
