Gübelin-Gemfields advocates more transparent gemstone reports

London-based Gemfields PLC and Swiss Gübelin Gem Lab co-released a statement on 23 July 2014 announcing the ‘next generation’ of disclosure on laboratory-issued gemstone certificates.

The initiative is to address to the issue that existing lab reports do not disclose the name of the party presenting the gemstone to the laboratory.

According to the announcement, Gübelin Gem Lab will offer its clients the choice of having their names included on the reports which is “an important step in furthering the level of disclosure and transparency in the chain of gemstone custody, providing improved understanding of a gemstone’s journey through the market”.

Ian Harebottle, CEO of Gemfields, said it is better to share more information about a gemstone’s journey among consumers and the trade. He hopes the approach will be adopted by the diamond sector as well.

“This is a voluntary measure and one which we hope will be embraced by our clients in the gemstone trade and retail business, and eventually be adopted by other laboratories in pursuit of an improved customer offering and greater industry transparency,” said Daniel Nyfeler, managing director of Gübelin Gem Lab.
