The Maharajas & Mughal Magnificence sale held by Christie’s New York on 19 June fetched US$109 million, setting the highest total for any auction of Indian art and Mughal objects and the second highest auction total for a private jewellery collection.
Three world auction records were set for Indian works of art and 29 lots achieved over US$1 million. The top lot of the sale was A Belle Époque Devant-de-corsage (photo 1), by Cartier, 1912, sold for US$10,603,500. Additional top lots included The Mirror of Paradise (photo 2), 52.58 carats, D-IF, which achieved US$6,517,500, and The Shah Jahan Dagger (photo 3)which sold for US$3,375,000, establishing the record price for an Indian jade object and record for a piece with Shah Jahan provenance.
Registered bidders came from 45 countries and regions from five continents. Ninety-three percent were sold by lot and 92 percent sold by value.
