De Beers closes mine in Ontario

Victor mine, De Beers Canada’s first and only diamond mine in Ontario, has ceased production after 10 years and 10 months of operation since the official opening in July 2008. About 8.1 million carats of diamonds were yielded during the decade.

 

Mining activities ended on 5 March. The last economic ore was processed on 25 May and switched focus to low-grade ore and limestone processing afterwards. Finally, the mineral processing plant will be completely shut down by the end of June. 

 

De Beers spent US$2.6 billion was spent on construction and operation. It paid C$110 million in royalties to the government of Ontario and another C$100 million in corporate social investment and payments to communities.

 

The mine won various awards throughout its life including John T. Ryan Award for mining safety for three consecutive years. In 2017, De Beers Canada was recognized with a national Silver Award in the Mining and Natural Resources Division of Canada’s Safest Employers.
