New fei cui design contest launched in Hong Kong

08-03-2019

The first Hong Kong Fei Cui Design Biennial Contest was officially launched on 2 March 2019 at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre during the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show. Organised by the Hong Kong Jewellery & Jade Manufacturers Association (HKJJA), the spectacular event was well-attended by senior government officials, industry leaders, designers, fei cui connoisseurs and international media. The high-achieving 2015 Miss Hong Kong winner Louisa Mak was invited to share her thoughts and stories on fei cui from a fresh perspective.

In his welcome remarks at the opening, chairman of HKJJA Ken Lo provided a brief introduction to the competition which aims to enhance exchanges in fei cui design, promote the influence of the oriental gemstone at an international level, and offer winning participants an opportunity to exhibit and sell their works at prestigious auctions and museums.

The most amusing moment came when the enthusiastic audience made a guess at the type of fei cui jewellery Louisa Mak was fond of. Prominent guests joining the entertaining session included Cherry Tse, permanent secretary for home affairs, Samuel Kung, director of MoCA Shanghai, Law Chi Kwong, president of the Hong Kong Jade Association (HKJA), Ho Koon Wan, director of Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Creative Centre and Billy Lau, president of HKJJA.

In the toasting session, the inauguration guests on stage passed their bright-coloured balloons to the centre as a gorgeous bunch, signifying the successful launch of the Hong Kong Fei Cui Design Biennial Contest with the united effort and support from across the region.

The Hong Kong Fei Cui Design Biennial Contest is co-organised by HKJA, with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Christie’s Hong Kong Limited as supporting organisations. Sponsors include Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group, Gold Uni Jewellery Company Limited and Golden Pinya International Investment Company Limited, HKJJA Foundation Limited and Hong Kong Jade & Stone Laboratory Limited. Major associations in the jewellery industry and the design sector in the region are partners.
