Christie’s HK autumn sale: a treasure hub

23-11-2018

Christie’s Hong Kong will be having an exciting line-up of some of the rarest works of art from all over the world at its autumn auction. For the magnificent jewels sale, ‘The Peacock Necklace’ and ‘The Ultimate Mogok Blue Treasure’ necklace are set to attract intense bidding.

‘The Peacock Necklace’ (photo 1), leading lot of the jewellery sale, is set in platinum with 21 cushion-shaped Kashmir royal blue sapphires totalling over 109 carats and 23 cushion-shaped diamonds totalling nearly 51 carats (estimate HK$95 million - $120 million).

‘The Ultimate Mogok Blue Treasure’ (photo 2) features a spectacular 396.89-carat Burmese cabochon sapphire, which was certified by the Guinness World Records as the largest cabochon sapphire in the world, with and diamonds designed by Edmond Chin of Etcetera (estimate: HK$4 million - $8 million). During a press preview section held yesterday, Rebecca Wei, president of Christie's Asia, received the official certificate from the Guinness (photo 3).

A very rare and important painting by Su Shi (1037-1101), a pre-eminent scholar of the Song Dynasty and one of the most important figures in Chinese history, titled ‘Wood and Rock’ (photo 4) is the top highlight of the autumn sale. The painting depicts withered tree branches standing alongside a curiously-shaped rock, and is complimented with calligraphy by celebrated painter and calligraphers including Mi Fu. According to the auction house, the painting is set to fetch at least HK$400 million.

The autumn also includes unique timepieces, ceramics, handbags, wines, and the inaugural Asia’s bejeweled gold box sale. Leading the sale is the gold and hardstone snuff-box by Johann-Christian Neuber with an estimate of HK$3.2 million - $5.2 million.
