61st BGJF breaks trade value record

The 61st Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair (BGJF) closed successfully on 25 February 2018 at Impact Muang Thong Thani in the city. In a bid to develop BGJF to become a one-stop, comprehensive fair for the gem and jewellery industry, the organiser Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), Ministry of Commerce categorised some 853 exhibitors into different zones occupying 2,003 booths this time. A total of record-breaking US$63.6 million in trade value was generated during the five-day show, said DITP.

Themed ‘Heritage & Craftsmanship’, the 61st BGJF highlighted the country’s cultural heritage and the craftsmanship of Thai artisans, and attracted visitors from 113 countries and regions with top five nations including India, Myanmar, China, the United States and Russia. Besides 747 Thai exhibitors, foreign exhibitors were from Hong Kong, Poland, Turkey, Japan, Singapore, India, South Korea, Israel, Indonesia and Canada.

Bangkok-based jeweller Der Mond exhibits at BGJF twice a year. Marketing manager Sirapat Pipatveeravat told Hong Kong Jewellery that more visitors coming to the show than last edition. They launch new collections for each BGJF, and are trying to focus more on design, quality and services. This time, the company brought one of their most expensive pieces – a royal blue sapphire necklace worth 10 million baht to the fair.

“The show used to be better, but right now it is still alright. Most visitors are from Middle East, Europe and China. We have both new and regular customers here,” noted Yash Jain of Glorious Gems Co, Ltd. The company trades mainly rubies, sapphires, emeralds and tanzanites in Bangkok for 30 years. He also stated that in the last two years, they have got good results from BGJF. Although the show is not as busy as Hong Kong shows, “over here we see serious buyers, otherwise there is no point for them to come here from a long way,” he added.

The 62nd BGJF will be held 7-11 September 2018 at the same venue.
