Fast track to appreciating the big three

In a bid to share the expertise in coloured gemstones with a wider audience, Swiss-based GЯbelin Group opened the GЯbelin Academy Hong Kong in 2013 gearing to industry professionals, gemstone connoisseurs and enthusiasts.

The Gübelin Coloured Gem Professional is a modular programme with increasing levels (Level 1 to 3). The small-class environment ensures tutorial level teaching. A certificate of attendance is granted on completion of each level. The first two levels are available at this moment.

Designed in a fast-track format for two days or four evenings, Level 1 introduces the gemmological, emotional, practical and historical basics of emerald, ruby and sapphire  (or ‘the big three’), and their key valuation criteria. Apart from acquiring theories, course participants also have an opportunity to gain a hands-on experience in distinguishing a set of high-quality reference collection gemstone samples of different species and varieties according to their distinctive gemmological features.

Combining exhaustive course material with practical sessions, Level 2 goes into details of the physical, chemical and optical properties of the big three in five days, exploring their origins, treatments, the mystery of light and certain optical effects, formation, mining, production and sales. Course participants will learn to look with a loupe to examine the interior of the gemstones. Successful completion of Level 1 is required to attend Level 2.

The tuition fee for Level 1 is HK$6,600; HK$12,000 for Level 2. Signing up for both levels will enjoy a special fee of HK$16,800.

Gübelin Academy, the educational arm of the 160-year family-owned Gübelin, opened its Swiss branch in 2014.
