Bursts of creativity

The 18th Hong Kong Jewellery Design Competition required participants to base their designs on the theme ‘Follow Your Heart’. While winners in the student group draw inspiration from personal reflections and experience, winners of the open group are based on generic subjects.

Claiming both the Best of Show award and Craftsmanship and Technology award in the open group, Auspicious Bird turns heads with a delicate structure that balances on the ear bridge. Crafted with yellow, rose and white gold, diamonds and peridots, the streamlined phoenix also elongates the wearer’s face, designer Yueh Hong Ning explained.

Inspired by the music box, To Rejoice with Your Heart, also a Best of Show winner, features bubbly angels playing musical instruments. Turn the small handle at the boat tail and the angels and music notes will move up and down.

The third Best of Show award went to Door Guardian, which takes advantage of the silver tarnish to highlight the silhouette of the Chinese unicorn.

Out of the three Best of Show award winners, two are created by designers of Luk Fook Jewellery. By encouraging employees to participate in contests, it also benefits the company as it stimulates the designers, resulting in better designs, said the company.
