Keepsake of Hawaii

When thinking of Hawaii, the diverse natural scenery, the tropical climate and plants, beaches, oceans, and indigenous Hawaiian culture will spring to mind. Perhaps it is time to add one more element: award winning jewellery designer Denny Wong, who promotes Hawaiian culture and beauty through jewellery designs to the world.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Denny Wong has made his home in Hawaii since 1974 when he started as an apprentice in a jewellery manufactory in Honolulu where he obtained basic jewellery making and design knowledge and techniques. He came back to Hong Kong for advanced learning before establishing his own company Denny Wong Design in 1980.

Known for his choices of vibrant coloured gemstones, impeccable craftsmanship, exquisite details, fine quality, praising the natural and spiritual beauty of Hawaii and his love for the islands, Wong’s creations have been recognised by many prestigious awards including the JCK Jewelers’ Choice Award, the International Platinum Design Competition, the Hawaiian Jewelers Association Award, etc.

“There are a lot of beautiful places in the world, but no place is like Hawaii’s weather, culture, and its exclusive spirit of Aloha,” Wong emphasised. His famous Plumeria collection captures the beauty of the islands’ famous flower, and the Deep Blue Treasure collection recreates Hawaii’s vast array of sea animals, including dolphins, turtles and seals, in 14-karat gold with diamonds. Every piece of Denny Wong’s jewellery is crafted from a variety of precious metals including 14-karat and 18-karat gold, platinum, sterling silver, and set with magnificent gemstones.

Gemstones in rich colours are Denny Wong’s favourite choices for jewellery design. He stated that the contrast of mirror-like finish and sandblasted finish, and a mix of different coloured gemstones are his jewellery’s signature look.

“I use fine gemstones with bright colours and storytelling lives, VVS to VS clarity diamonds, platinum and 18-karat gold. Our ‘precious silver’ even contains 95 percent silver, one percent gold, and one to two percent platinum in order to make it better tarnish-resistant,” Wong told Hong Kong Jewellery. Despite of the differences in price levels and materials, delicate craftsmanship holds consistently with every piece of Wong’s one-of-a-kind jewellery.

Influenced by his educational experience in England and oriental cultural background, he has also been enlightened by the European and Eastern culture, for instance, Art Nouveau. He cited that his design inspirations also come from the cultural elements from China such as the dragon, Chinese ink painting, Chinese counter chips, and other traditional patterns.

Besides selling to its major market in the United States, Denny Wong Design is also exported to Canada, the Caribbean, Japan and China. Talking about the growth from a one-man-band company to a recognised Hawaii-style jewellery brand, Denny Wong said: “Our future plan is to develop and expand our brand in the huge China market with a shop-in-shop mode which is the same way we did for the US market.”
