Objectifying diamond grading parameters

Specialising in diamond analysis solutions, OGI Systems Limited has introduced Symmetry Leakage, a new three-dimensional symmetry analysis and evaluation technology for polished diamonds in April 2015.

“What we see in the market today is that symmetry grading is very subjective, because it depends on the grader and how well he/she is trained,” Nick Rottiers of OGI Systems Europe told Hong Kong Jewellery. Designed to reduce human error, Symmetry Leakage works by taking the average of physical measurements in a stone (such as crown angle, pavilion depth, lower girdle depth, etc.) with which an ideal 3D model is built and then comparing this model to the actual stone. The result is presented in the form of a Symmetry Leakage percentage where a more symmetrical stone generates a smaller figure. Apart from grading laboratories the system is also targeted at polishers, who could immediately see the performance of the cutting. Without the system they could only learn the proportion. Symmetry grading can be produced in just 18 seconds and it can be applied to diamonds of different shapes. Rottiers said a few laboratories are now testing to see how they could incorporate Symmetry Leakage to their existing systems. Some diamond manufacturers have already adopted it. Will this new parameter cause confusion if it is only used by some laboratories but not the others? “No, it is going to be a real asset for laboratories that will add value to the grading process because it is a measurable value”, he answered.
