The Diamond Empowerment Fund (DEF) has introduced its first scholarships exclusively for youngsters in Canada’s Northwest Territories together with the Mine Training Society and the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT).
Canada’s Northwest Territories hold three diamond mines: Dominion, Diavik which Rio Tinto owns a 60 percent interest and Gahcho Kué, a joint venture between De Beers Canada and Mountain Province Diamonds Inc. Anna Martin, DEF president and senior vice president of the GIA said: “Creating education and employment opportunities for youth who live in areas where natural diamonds are found is at the heart of the DEF’s mission.”
DEF gifted a couple who has been together for six years a trip to Botswana for winning its ‘Real Stories Real Diamonds Real Impact’, a millennial-focused video proposal contest in February.
