Best drawings in fei cui design contest

The 2017 International Design Competition on Trendy Fei Cui Jewellery has successfully drawn wider attention to modern fei cui jewellery design in the region where broadened interest has been seen in the magnificent gemstone which carries deep-rooted Chinese culture. In this section we introduce three design talents who excelled over other contestants in the Open Group (Drawings) category.

Ma Wen Huang, Champion

Uniqueness of handmade jewellery

Ma Wen Huang (photo 1), the designer who has a masculine appearance caught the judges’ eyes with Porcelain (photo 2), a graceful necklace and earrings design sketch inspired by the Qing Dynasty princess clothing awarded the Champion of the category. Participating in competitions is his way to enhance design ability, challenge himself and encourage his metalworking students. In the industry for over 30 years, Huang says that although nowadays metalwork is almost done by machine, he persists in handling metalwork purely by hand for a more emotional and natural touch which cannot be attained by technology.

Juncherdvanich Praphaiphan, 1st Runner-up

The rising star of fei cui jewellery design

Born in Thailand, Juncherdvanich Praphaiphan (photo 3) received professional training in jewellery design in Hong Kong, and entered Perfect Group International Holdings Limited in April 2017 as a jewellery designer. With friends’ encouragement, she took part in the contest where her piece Bamboo (photo 4) won the 1st runner-up. Her first design of fei cui jewellery, the winningbrooch vividly relives the moment that pandas play around in the bamboo forest, clumsy and cute, and pick off the bamboos and chew them with pleasure. She used fei cui to reflect the vitality of bamboo, matching with the black-and-white pandas.

Eugene Chen, 2nd Runner-up

Balancing emotions & reasons for infinite possibilities

Renowned for bringing new life to conventional symbols in the Chinese culture used in fei cui jewellery design such as gourds, Buddha, pea pods and yuyi, Eugene Chen (photo 5) has gained the recognition of the judges with his art deco necklace and earring design (photo 6) featuring different sizes of drop-shaped fei cui gourds. Founder of RealizedStudio, the Taiwanese designer believes that jewellery is the combination of the beauty of nature and craftsmanship, as well as the balance between sensation and rationality. Chen is a frequent winner of jewellery design contests. In the Chuk Kam Jewellery Design Competition 2018, for instance, he won in the fashionable 18-karat group category.
