'Double Golden Week' brings fleeting joy to HK retailers

09-10-2017

The eight-day ‘Double Golden Week’ holiday, combing the National Day holiday and the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, ended yesterday. The number of Mainland tourists visiting Hong Kong recorded a surge of 5.9 percent compared with the same period last year. Some local retailers said sales were particularly robust over the first couple of days of the holiday; after the Mid-Autumn Festival, however, things went back to normal.

According to Lau Hak Bun, general manager of Great China operation for Chow Sang Sang, over the first three days of the holidays the group’s jewellery outlets across Hong Kong witnessed a 15-percent increase in the number of visitors, and a double-digit growth in sales with the average unit price jumping to HK$10,000 from HK$9,000 before the holiday. “Sales went back to normal right after the Mid-Autumn Festival when visitors returned home for celebration. They left early in order to avoid the peak traffic. I was surprised that the brisk sale period was so short,” Lau told Ming Pao.

The first seven days of the Golden Week holiday have brought nearly 1.27 million travellers from mainland China to Hong Kong, a 5.9-percent up year-on-year, according to the data from the HKSAR Immigration Department. (Thumbnail courtesy: GovHK)
