Alrosa recovers a 241-carat rough diamond

Alrosa announced that the mining company found a 241.21-carat rough diamond (photo) at its Nyurbinsky mine in Yakutia on 16 June 2016. The stone is one of the largest rough diamonds recovered in Russia and the third largest among those found at Nyurba Mining and Processing Division.

According Alrosa, the diamond measures 38.64mm x 27.34mm x 25.46mm and is translucent with a grey hue. Traces of dissolution-etching channels and caverns are observed on the surface. The intermediate and peripheral zones contain large cracks.

The Nyurbinsky open-pit mine was put into operation in 2001 and had reserves of 36.9 million carats as of 1 January 2015, according to an evaluation under the Joint Ore Reserves Committee Code.
