Largest star sapphire found in Sri Lanka

A star sapphire weighing 1,404.49 carats was claimed by gemologists in Sri Lanka to be discovered in a mine in the country, according to a recently BBC report.

Named ‘The Star of Adam’, the new gem was mined in the city of Ratnapura, in southern Sri Lanka, which is known as the ‘City of Gems’.

The current owner of the stone said the stone is valued at at least US$100 million and estimates that it could sell for as much as US$175 million at auction. “The moment I saw it, I decided to buy,” the current ownertold BBC. “When the stone was brought to me I suspected that it might be the world's largest blue star sapphire. So I took a risk and bought it.”

The previous largest star sapphire weighed 1,395 carats.
