IGI Certifies 50 ct. Largest Lab-Grown Diamond

The International Gemological Institute (IGI) graded a 50.25-carat lab-grown diamond submitted by India-based Ethereal Green Diamond recently. The lab-grown diamond represents a landmark achievement in the lab-grown diamond sector and has been claimed the largest polished lab-grown diamond in history.

Named “Shiphra”, the lab-grown diamond is a Type IIa emerald cut with G colour, VS2 clarity, and an excellent score for cut, polish and symmetry. It is the world’s first polished lab-grown diamond above 50 carats, claimed IGI.

Ethereal Green grew the 150-carat rough using the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method over a period of eight months. It cut the stone in Surat, India, and displayed the polished at its JCK Las Vegas booth. Swiss brand Shiphra Jewelry has bought it and lent its name to the piece.

Tehmasp Printer, president and managing director of IGI India said: “This gemstone is a paradigm-shifting breakthrough, surpassing 50 carats while exemplifying preeminent standards of sophistication and quality.”

The new record was set shortly after IGI certifying a record-setting 35-carat CVD lab-grown diamond that Maitri Lab Grown Diamonds produced. In May, The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has examined a 34.59-carat CVD lab-grown diamond also from Ethereal Green.
