Mining giant De Beers is examining Greenland’s potential to be a source of marine diamonds.
"De Beers Marine (DBM) would like to determine whether the offshore environment is conducive to the formation of secondary diamond deposits," an Environmental Mitigation Assessment prepared by De Beers for Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) stated. The eight-day surveyof around 800 kilometers of seabed off Greenland's west coast, near the town of Maniitsoq, according to Reuters’ recitation of a GEUS spokesperson. It will take months to analyse.
Deposits of diamonds, created under high pressure in volcanoes, are known to be present onshore in west Greenland. Diamonds extracted from the sea are generally of higher quality given that only premium stones could survive water erosion.
