Sotheby's diamond sale accepts crypto payment

21-9-2021

Sotheby's Hong Kong will extend the cryptocurrency option to bidders at the upcoming Diamonds: The Dazzling∞sale scheduled for 24 September.

The leading lot is a 177.51-carat Harry Winston diamond necklace (photo), with an estimate of US$4.6 to US$5.9 million, or 128 bitcoins. It features a total of 177.51 carats of diamonds, including nine D-colour pear-shaped. The sale also offers loose diamonds from 8.08 to 50.05 carats. All eight lots are payable by both cryptocurrency and traditional currency. Buyers can pay Bitcoin and Ethereum via Coinbase Commerce.

The move follows its sale in July of a 101.38-carat pear-shaped D-colour flawless diamond to an anonymous crypto buyer for US$12.3 million, the highest price for a gemstone purchased in cryptocurrency.
