Cindy Chao's peony in the rabbit hole of V&A Museum

3-6-2021

Taiwanese jeweller Cindy Chao’s Peony Brooch finds itself a tremendous home among the historic jewellery pieces at the William and Judith Bollinger Gallery of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

The glamour peony has a honeycomb structure made of titanium in purple to keep the weight as light as possible and allows light to shine through the exquisitely embedded 2,458 rubies totalling almost 230 carats. Centrally nested within the ruby-encrusted petals are pistils in yellow lacquer.

Debuted in 2018 at the Masterpiece London Art Fair, the exquisite peony hailed Outstanding Object award. It was ‘an example of contemporary craftsmanship and great design’ and ‘reflect scholarship, rarity, connoisseurship in their category’ in the eyes of the 150 judging committees. The piece is her third creations to be displayed in a museum.
