Lab reports 50 synthetics found on necklace

25-5-2021

Laboratories Liechtenstein (GGTL) receives a necklace with 50 flux-grown synthetic rubies, submitted for treatments and country of origin identification, the largest amounts of synthetics found on a piece.

The rubies are in high quality and saturated red and have mainly fingerprints and clouds amongst other small and atypical inclusions visually. Viewed under the microscope, “most of the stones resembled to what one would normally call heat treated with some glassy residues, but that none of the inclusion scenarios gave away any possible country of origin, something highly unusual when an experienced analyst observes such stones,” GGTL explained the reason behind the suspicion that the rubies were flux-grown synthetics.

The stones were confirmed to be synthetic after a series of tests including chemical analysis and DFI fluorescence imaging. GGTL highlighted that they can be easily misidentified as natural rubies if tested only by microscopy.
