Tiffany to expand diamond traceability

19-8-2020

Tiffany promises to disclose the full background of its newly sourced diamonds weighing 0.18 carats or above. Starting this October, the countries and regions of where the diamonds are mined, cut, polished, graded and set will be shown on a Tiffany diamond certificate.

The diamond supply chain is still opaque. Therefore, the 183-year-old jewellery brand takes the lead to bring a new level of transparency. “Our customers deserve to know that a Tiffany diamond was sourced with the highest standards, not only in quality but also in social and environmental responsibility. We believe that diamond traceability is the best means to ensure both.” said Anisa Kamadoli Costa, chief sustainability officer, Tiffany & Co.

Diamonds mined from area of concerns such as Zimbabwe and Angola will be prohibited. Dimaonds must be strictly from a responsibly sourced supplier and mined in countries such as Australia, Botswana, Canada, Namibia, Russia and South Africa. Roughs will continue their journey in Antwerp for sorting. Cutting and polishing will be done in Mauritius, Botswana and Vietnam, Cambodia and Belgium.
