GIA promotes AI diamond grading

28-7-2020

Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and IBM Research has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) system for automatisation of diamond clarity grading, which GIA’s laboratories in New York City and Carlsbad currently in use.

The technology uses data from tens of millions diamonds GIA laboratories have examined with GIA’s grading standards. GIA EVP Tom Moses noted that GIA has been trying to automate clarity trading for over a decade. It helps deliver grading results with consistency, accuracy and speed.

Initially applied to the most popular diamond sizes, the institute aims to expand the accurate and consistently evaluate technique to other sizes, and shapes. “This automation will allow us to grade more stones, smaller sizes, and to do it more efficiently,” he added.

GIA and IBM are planning other collaboration combining gemological evaluation with AI innovation.
