Tutti Frutti bracelet garners online record of US$1.34 m

4-5-2020

An iconic Cartier “Tutti Frutti” art deco bracelet hammered in a single-lot online sale held by Sotheby’s New York at US $1.34 million, the highest price for any jewel sold in an online auction as well as the highest price for any jewel sold at auction in 2020 by any house.

The tutti frutti piece stars Moghul-cut emeralds, rubies and sapphires set in platinum with diamonds, onyx and enamel. Created circa 1930, it has never appeared at auction before. Catharine Becket, Sotheby’s head of magnificent jewels auctions in New York commented in a statement Tutti Frutti jewels have always held a special allure for collectors, capturing the West’s fascination with the ‘exotic’ at a time when travel was relatively limited, much as it is today. She added that the result is a testament to the fact that, even under the most challenging of circumstances, the demand for great art endures.

In the history of Sotheby’s selling Tutti Frutti jewels by Cartier, Daisy Fellowes’ Collier Hindou Tutti Frutti customised by Cartier achieved the world auction record for any Tutti Frutti jewel by Cartier at US$2.7 million in 1991, which has not yet been broken.
