GIA device can now screen pink diamonds

11-09-2019

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) updated the software of its GIA iD100 gem tester on 4 September to distinguish natural pink diamonds from laboratory-grown diamonds and diamond simulants.

“As the presence of laboratory-grown diamonds increases in the market, it is beneficial to have a robust, research-based, proven gem testing device such as the GIA iD100,” said Anthony Brown, GIA director of instruments operations. “Even though our monthly sales have tripled, we are able to fulfill orders within two business days.”

Current GIA iD100 owners can purchase the new software online at store.GIA.edu for US$249. New devices are pre-installed with the new software.

GIA also released a free update to the existing GIA iD100 software with the expanded capability to screen blue-to-green and brown diamonds. It is said that the free update will need to be installed before the pink diamond software upgrade can be added. (Photo courtesy: GIA)
