Polish designer Ewa Nowak has developed a piece of face jewellery named Incognito shields wearers from facial recognition technology.
The jewellery took her two to three months to make. It consists of two brass circles below the wearer’s eyes and a long piece of brass stretches up to the forehead and can be worn like a pair of glasses. The face jewellery was uploading photos taken with the mask on to a Facebook, where DeepFace algorithm applies to accurately identify people in the photo and asks if you would like to tag them. She said cameras are able to recognise our age, gender and mood and precisely match us to the database. The face recognition can still distinguish us even if our faces are partially covered. “Incognito aims to protect your image from facial recognition algorithms used in modern cameras,” Nowak said.
She has no mass-production plans yet as she considers the piece as art rather than a product. Besides, the design must be moulded to the wearer’s face to be effective.
Incognito recently won the Mazda Design Award at the Łódź Design Festival. Nowak submitted the face jewellery for exhibition at the national museum in China. The jewellery piece was rejected for political reasons after two weeks.
