Gemfields sees sales recovery on emeralds

21-05-2019

Gemfields’ emerald sale in Singapore ended 17 May fetched US$22.4 million, making an accumulated revenue of US$589 million since the first emerald and beryl sale in July 2009.

Thirty-five lots of higher quality rough emeralds mined at Kagem were on offer, with 80 percent or 28 lots sold. The top lot has set the record price per carat for Gemfields emerald auctions. In terms of carat weight, 72 percent of the rough were sold, achieving an average price of US$71.85 per carat.

The auction was participated by 45 companies, the largest number of participation among the five most recent Gemfields higher quality Kagem sales.

“As the results of this auction show, we continue to see encouraging signs of recovery in the emerald sector," said Adrian Banks, Gemfields’ managing director of product and sales. According to him, Thai company Chatree Gems, a first-time participant of Gemfields’ emerald auction, has won three lots weighing a total of 62 carats, including the top lot comprising two exceptional gems which have been named “Green” and “Ice” paying homage to Green Ice, a 1981 movie starring Omar Sharif and Ryan O’Neal.
